Your Spouse, Your Shield

Cleaning my house, going through some things and the Lord showed me something. It’s so gracious of Him to meet us where we are, in the little things and monotony to light the path. I have a word to share:

So many couples today rely on their partner’s faith. They rely on it for salvation, for healing, for hope, and sadly, out of fear. They fear having their own because if they cant see the fruit, they may have failed at yet something else. They may have yet another drop of guilt to add to buckets that seems so heavy already.

What He showed me was that we are holding our spouses out as a shield, not realizing that in the pelting and pouring and refining, they are tired. Worn. Sore. They are flexing every spiritual muscle they have- and some they don’t- for your sake. But fear has you convinced that that is “their” thing. They’re better at it and you are so sure that they are strong that you never ask how you are weak. As your face is hidden in fear or shame, you cannot see the battle endured on your behalf. You’re not meant to- that’s what fear does.

Your spouse can’t be your shield against poverty. They can’t be your shield against addiction. They can’t break your strongholds for you. They can’t be your translator for all things spiritual so that you don’t have to seek answers between you and God. And they certainly can’t be the only praying person in your household.

Praying is believing. Pray, love, seek, comfort, bless, mourn, grieve, worship, hope…they’re all action verbs. Hold is an action verb too, so what will you hold?

Ephesians 6:16 doesn’t say hold up your spouse’s faith as a shield- it says hold up THE shield. “In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.” Ephesians 6:16 NLT There is but one. And its as equal opportunity as it gets. And you have the authority to do it. It doesn’t matter how much guilt. It doesn’t matter how many mistakes or if you’re holding it right. Just pick it up…you might need to put those buckets down though.
